Adobe Opens Wired New Yorker Tablet Platform to Publishers with Analytics

Posted on by

first_imgThe Digital Publishing Suite aims to be a comprehensive solution for turning traditional magazines created in InDesign into digital publications that can be distributed to devices of all sorts. But the one aspect that intrigues me most is this: It includes Omniture analytics for digital magazines. (Adobe acquired Omniture a year ago for $1.8 billion.)If you use the suite to produce tablet versions of your magazine, you can use the analytics service to get a bevy of information about how they’re being read—all aggregated and anonymized to avoid privacy issues. You can see whether readers are opening the issues they’ve bought. You know which stories they’re jumping to, and whether they tap through every page of an article or abandon it after the first one. You can confirm whether they’re watching ambitious multimedia elements such as embedded video. And you can tell whether they’re reading front-to-back, back-to-front, or hopping around randomly. It sounds like a goldmine of useful information that publishers could use to make publications that serve their readers better. And much of it might help with a magazine’s traditional, dead-tree version, too—I suspect that there’d be a correlation between covers that prompt tablet subscribers to open the issues quickly and ones that are newsstand winners.Analytics can’t tell you everything you need to know about your readers’ relationship with your content. Seeing that a lot of people chose to read a particular article, for instance, says nothing about whether they liked what they got once they finished. So traditional research such as surveys and focus groups still have their place, and free-form feedback such as reader comments on online versions of stories can be very useful. But I know that if I were editing a magazine with digital editions produced with Adobe’s suite, I’d be hungry for the new clues about reader behavior that these analytics could provide. Back when I was editor of PC World, creating a magazine that newsstand buyers and subscribers loved was one of the great pleasures of my job. It was also something of a dark art. There were plenty of signs we’d succeeded: issues flying off the stands, renewal rates staying healthy, high scores in the pricey reader surveys we conducted. But in the end, connecting the dots of reader satisfaction was difficult, and agonizingly slow.(The closest I got to instant gratification, incidentally, was when I traveled on an airplane and happened to sit next to someone who was reading PC World. Rather than introducing myself, I’d peek out of one corner of my eye and see which articles my neighbor lingered on, and which ones he or she skimmed right past.)On the Web, things are different.  Analytics services such as Omniture let editors and other media types see what’s getting read, what’s getting ignored, and how consumers navigate through everything a site has to offer. They let you make decisions in real time, rather than waiting for months. At Adobe’s MAX conference in Los Angeles this week, the publishing software company is announcing its Digital Publishing Suite, the fully-commercialized version of the system that Wired, The New Yorker, and other publications have been using to create iPad versions of their magazines. It’s rolling out in pre-release form for publishers who’d like to try it out; the final version is due in the second quarter of 2011.last_img read more

Civil society BNP Jamaat have no strength to defeat AL Joy

first_imgPrime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son and ICT affairs adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Photo: BSSPrime minister Sheikh Hasina’s information and communication technology affairs adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy on Saturday said people reaped the benefits of development as they voted for ‘Boat’, election symbol of ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL).“The people witnessed massive development after voting for boat. On the contrary, when the BNP comes to power, they destroy the country,” he told a discussion at a hotel in the capital.Suchinta Foundation organised the discussion titled ‘21 August: Present-Future of Bangladesh’s Politics’ with its chairperson Mohammad A Arafat in the chair.Freedom fighter and cultural personality Nasiruddin Yusuf Bachchu, professor at Dhaka University (DU) Mesbah Kamal, freedom fighter Rokeya Kabir, late president Zillur Rahman’s daughter Tania Rahman, and journalist Mozammel Babu addressed the discussion, among others.Joy said AL has reached to its present stage braving all kinds of conspiracies. Civil society members, BNP and Jamaat have no strength to defeat the united Awami League, he added.“We can feel the pangs of sufferings for losing family members. I vowed to come to politics and oust the BNP government after the 21 August monstrous attack,” the PM advisor said. The then prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia was involved in the 21 August monstrous grenade attack, Joy said, adding it took 14 years to complete the trail of the heinous attack.Mainul Hosein, a former adviser to the past caretaker government, Dr Kamal Hossain and others were masterminds behind the 1/11, he said, adding, “Mainul Hosein helped Tarique Rahman, mastermind of the 21 August grenade attack, to flee from the country”.1/11 is the popular term in the country for indicating the changeover took place in January 2007, when military-backed caretaker government assumed power. Now they are trying to make Tarique the prime minister bringing him back home, he added. The AL does not do politics of killings like the BNP, Joy said, adding a total of 24 AL leaders and activists were killed in the 21 August grenade attack when leaders like Ahsanullah Master and Shah AMS Kibria were also killed during the BNP regime.“If BNP could have remained in the state power for 10 years like AL, no AL leader could have remained alive,” he said.Replying to BNP leaders’ allegation of arresting their leaders and activists, Joy said legal actions will be taken against those who killed people through arson attacks in 2013-14.Criticising the so-called civil society members, Joy said those who are ashamed of raising voice against killers and terrorists, they actually are trying to save the killers and terrorists.Talking about the newly-formed Jatiya Oikya Front, he said the Jatiya Oikya Front is trying to rehabilitate the BNP.Referring to different trials completed under the AL government, Joy said AL has established rule of law. And Tarique Rahman will be brought to book after extradition, he added.AL does not fear those who are not capable of securing a single vote in the election, he said, adding that AL does not care for the threats of so-called civil society members.Addressing the discussion, Tania Rahman said the main target of the 21 August grenade attack was to make the AL, which led the country’s liberation war, leaders less. The speakers said the 21 August attack and the 15 August incident of killing father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with his family member were tied in a same string. The purposes of the incidents were to kill the country’s liberal democratic politics and make the country a militant state, they added.last_img read more

Imran Khan vows to hold peace talks with India

Posted on by

first_imgPakistani prime minister Imran Khan. Photo: RuetersPakistani prime minister Imran Khan Tuesday vowed to hold peace talks with arch-rival India following elections in the neighbouring country, after a similar offer from the former cricketer was “rebuffed”.Khan made the announcement during a speech at a Saudi Arabian investment conference where the newly minted leader launched a charm offensive targeting potential investors as Pakistan seeks to secure funds amid a yawning balance of payment crisis.“When I won the elections and came to power the first thing I tried to do was extend a hand of peace to India,” Khan told the crowd at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) in Riyadh, saying the overture was later “rebuffed” by Delhi.“Now what we are hoping is that we wait until the elections then again we will resume our peace talks with India,” he added, referring to upcoming nationwide polls scheduled to take place by mid-May.In September India pulled the plug on a rare meeting between its foreign minister and her Pakistani counterpart on the sidelines of a UN summit—a move that was termed “arrogant” by Khan and unleashed a barrage of insults from both sides.India has long accused Pakistan of backing militants in Kashmir, a Himalayan territory divided between the two countries but claimed in full by both since independence in 1947.Delhi has stationed about 500,000 soldiers in the portion of Kashmir it controls, where separatist groups demand independence or a merger with Pakistan.Khan’s call for peace talks comes as his administration is desperately seeking funds from “friendly” countries, including Saudi Arabia, to shore up Pakistan’s deteriorating finances. The prime minister’s attendance at the FII comes as leading policy-makers and corporate chiefs shunned the conference in response to the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.During his address at the FII Khan confirmed that Pakistan was also in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over a new bailout.Since taking power in August Khan has also sought loans from allies such as China and Saudi Arabia, promised to recover funds stolen by corrupt officials, and embarked on a series of high-profile populist austerity measures. But help has been in short supply and economists’ warnings have grown increasingly urgent.last_img read more
