Howrylak seeks passage of legislation to honor Troy police officer Today State Representative Martin Howrylak (Right), Mayor Dan Slater, Police Chief Gary Mayer, and Troy Police Officer John Julian (Left) testified in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on behalf of legislation to in honor of Troy Police Officer Martin “Marty” Chivas, who died in the line of duty on April 22, 1974.Troy Police Officer Martin (Marty) Chivas, was killed in the line of duty April 22, 1974 while investigating a burglary at a gas station on Rochester Road and I-75. Officer Chivas was only 24 years old. If enacted, Rep. Howrylak’s proposal (HB 4191) would name the portion of I-75 located at the Rochester Road exit as the “Officer Martin ‘Marty’ Chivas Memorial Highway.”“Our community is a safe place to live, work, and raise a family because of the hard work and dedication of the Troy Police Department,” said Rep. Howrylak. “This memorial will serve as a fitting tribute for the sacrifice Officer Chivas made in service to our community.”This legislation was put before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for consideration and is expected to be voted on by the members of the committee next week.###last_img
