first_imgIndian wrestling’s hopes of winning a medal at the Rio Olympics in August have been jolted after the Phogat sisters — Geeta and Babita — were disqualified from the Summer Games. Not only that, the country’s top women wrestlers also face a possible life ban.According to a report in the DNA, The two forfeited their repechage bouts under “injury default” during the recently-concluded Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Ulaanbator, Mongolia.Since the team’s head coach didn’t inform the United World Wrestling (UWW) delegate about their injuries, the wrestlers might be handed life bans for the act of indiscipline. While Olympian and world championship medallist Geeta forfeited her 53kg bout against China’s Zhou Zhangting, Babita failed to appear against Mexico’s Alma Jane Valencia. Despite several announcements by the organisers, the two failed to turn up for their respective bronze-medal bouts.Meanwhile, the  Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has named Lalita Kumari as Babita’s replacement in 53kg, while Sakshi Malik will compete in place of Geeta in 58kg in Istanbul.last_img
